‘It was time to say stop’ to Iranian establishment: Belgian foreign minister

Belgium’s Foreign Minister Maxime Prevot has told Al Jazeera that he “understand[s] why the US and Israel have launched these attacks”.

“Frankly speaking, Iran was not a model student regarding the respect of international law,” he told Al Jazeera from Brussels, citing “threats against its own population”, violence and torture.

“So it was time to say stop to the way Iran was managing the country,” he added.

Still, Prevot emphasised he and other European representatives are advocating for de-escalation and a ceasefire “as soon as possible”.

European Union foreign ministers are slated to meet their counterparts at the Gulf Cooperation Council tomorrow.
